Which Simpsons character will die?

The yellow hand of death comes to Springfield this Sunday.
Producers announced that when the The Simpsons returns for its 26th season on Sunday, the episode will kill off one major character, the New York Post reports.
Who is destined to join animated heaven alongside Maude Flanders, Bleeding Gums Murphy and Doctor Marvin Monroe? Some clues are floating around online, but the biggest one comes from executive producer Al Jean, who said the actor playing the character won an Emmy for the role.

Of course, killing off a character is more of a ploy to keep people interested in the show, which has increasingly turned to gimmicks and an endless parade of guest stars. Remember: This is also the season in which an already controversial Family Guy crossover episode is in the works.
Still, we can’t help wondering who’s due for the offing. Here are six likely candidates:
Krusty the Clown
Krusty may seem like the obvious choice, since the episode is titled Clown in the Dumps. But if that were the case there wouldn’t be much of a mystery here, would there?
The episode description says Krusty (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to retire after he’s offended by a comedy cable channel roast of him — and that has “dire consequences” for one citizen of Springfield. But maybe it’s someone close to the clown?

Sideshow Bob
It’s possible Krusty’s homicidal former partner might be in for it. He’s voiced by Kelsey Grammer, who won an Emmy for the role in 2006. Grammer has showed up on the show about 13 times over the years, usually in a plot to kill Bart.
Grammer has denied that Bob is getting his just desserts — but that’s just the kind of diabolic thing Bob would say.
Moe
Hank Azaria won an Emmy for playing the curmudgeonly barkeep in 2003 (he first won for his “Simpsons” work in 1998). In fact, one of Moe’s running gags is his constant turning to suicide as the solution for his problems.
But who would sling the Duff to Homer and crew if he were gone? And who would Bart prank dial?
Grandpa Simpson
Not only is he old, he’s cold, and there are wolves after him. Homer’s dad has been rattling around the retirement home for a long time — and, really, how many sad-old-man jokes can one show have? He’s also voiced by Dan Castellaneta, who’s won four Emmys for his Simpsons voices.
It’s not impossible he could be headed out the door.
Comic Book Guy
Springfield’s nerd in chief might get caught up in something that could lead to his demise. He’s a familiar enough character that it would cause a stir, but he’s not crucial enough to the show that it would have any real consequences.
Azaria also plays him (and plenty of others), and took home the Emmy in 2001 for the very Comic Book Guy-centric episode titled, Worst. Episode. Ever, in which the corpulent shop assistant already had a heart attack. Let’s hope he still doesn’t think he’s wasted his life.
Homer
Some online commenters are asking whether the Simpsons is going to go full Game of Thrones and axe its beloved (but much overused) patriarch. It’s not incredibly likely, though we can imagine that Homer (also voiced by Dan Castellaneta) might kill himself after the Family Guy crossover after seeing what his life has become.
