DIAMONDS might be a girl’s best friend but they can also be a hit with thieves, as a Sydney auction house has discovered.
A precious pink argyle and white diamond ring worth more than half a million dollars was stolen during a jewellery auction in Alexandria on Saturday.
The ring valued at $577,000 was snatched from a display counter at Theodore Bruce Auctions on Ralf St between 12.30pm and 1.25pm.
An attendant at the auction house discovered the ring missing and contacted police.
Officers had not been able to review CCTV footage last night but each jewel in the setting was laser inscribed with its own serial number to enable them to be easily identified.
Identifying a suspect will be difficult as 100 people walked through the auction in the hour the theft is thought to have occurred. Police are calling for anyone with information to come forward.
